Who Can Apply

The Inter-Institutional MSc Program in Energy Systems and Sustainability (IDMSc-ESS) is addressed to:

(a) engineers holding degrees from NTUA and other Higher Education Institutions in Greece with a five-year course of study, or from equivalent institutions abroad recognized as equivalent to Greek universities, as well as graduates of four-year degree programs in the fields of Physics and Chemistry from Higher Education Institutions in Greece or equivalent institutions abroad. A necessary admission requirement is a degree grade higher than 6.5/10 and proof of English language proficiency at Proficiency (C2) level or IELTS (Academic) with a minimum score of 7/10. The Program is also open to final-year students of the above Schools and disciplines who meet the above requirements and can demonstrate that they will have completed their first cycle of studies before the beginning of classes.

(b) employees of the Funding Body holding equivalent academic qualifications, with a license to practice the profession in Greece where required, and possessing either proof of English language proficiency at Proficiency level or IELTS (Academic) with a minimum score of 7/10, or a degree from an English-speaking university.

A total of 37 students will be admitted each academic year, of whom 7 will come from the Funding Body.

Selection Criteria

Each year, the Program Studies Committee determines, by decision, the details for the implementation of the selection criteria, the definition of any additional criteria, and the possible conduct of examinations or interviews, the results of which are taken into account during the selection process.

For the selection of postgraduate students, the following are taken into consideration:

  • The overall diploma/degree grade and the candidate’s ranking in relation to the grades of other graduates from the same School/Department and academic year.
  • The candidate’s research and professional activity, where applicable.
  • Other postgraduate degrees, where applicable.
  • Letters of recommendation.
  • Academic or other distinctions.
  • The overall profile of the candidates (abilities, goals, motivation, and prospects for development).

Admission approval to the IDMSc-ESS for candidate students is granted by the competent NTUA bodies, following verification of the proposed applications with regard to compliance with the above minimum admission criteria. Selection among candidates who meet the minimum admission requirements is carried out after evaluation of their application, on the basis of the qualitative and social criteria defined in the relevant call for expressions of interest for participation in the Program.

The third-party natural persons, i.e. postgraduate students of the IDMSc Program, do not undertake any obligation towards DESFA. It is the wish of the Funding Body that the successful attendance and completion of this demanding Program will serve as a substantial asset for the graduates’ subsequent professional path.

Student Selection Procedure

Each year, a call for expressions of interest for participation in the IDMSc Program is published, in accordance with the timetable set out in the Academic Calendar of Postgraduate Studies approved by the Senate of the Institution. The call specifies the number of available places, the application submission period, the eligible categories of degree holders, and the list of required supporting documents. Application files are submitted to the Program Secretariat exclusively in electronic form, in accordance with the details set out in the call. If a candidate has not yet formally graduated during the selection period, they may be included in the list of selected postgraduate students, on the condition that their undergraduate studies will be completed by September.

Applications not accompanied by the required supporting documents, or submitted after the deadline, are not taken into consideration during the application evaluation and candidate selection process.

The Program Studies Committee is responsible for evaluating the application files, taking into account the criteria and requirements of the applicable legislation, and prepares a ranked list of candidates. Selected postgraduate students are announced on the Program website following an appropriate anonymization procedure and are also informed individually by the Secretariat.

All selected candidates must declare, within 10 calendar days from notification of the selection lists, whether they accept their place as postgraduate students. Selected candidates who do not accept their place are replaced by alternates in order of priority. In the event that a selected candidate accepts the place and subsequently withdraws, any future reapplication by that candidate is excluded.

Call for Expressions of Interest – Submission of Application

Applications, together with the required supporting documents, are submitted electronically to the Program Secretariat within the deadline specified in the call, which may be extended by decision of the Coordinating Committee.

Supporting Documents

The required forms and supporting documents that applicants must submit are as follows:

  • Application form, which is assigned a protocol number by the Secretariat of the IDMSc Program, and the applicant is informed accordingly.
  • Copy of Degree/Diploma (degrees obtained abroad must be certified through a statement of equivalence and correspondence issued by DOATAP).
  • Official transcript of undergraduate courses, indicating also the final degree grade.
  • Curriculum Vitae, including participation in programs, research activities, etc., relevant to the subject area of the Program.
  • Proof of English language proficiency, certified by a recognized body.
  • Letter of motivation for the candidate’s participation in the Program.
  • Simple photocopy of the applicant’s national identity card.
  • License to practice the profession in Greece, where required for certain categories of applicants.

Additional supporting documents that may be submitted and taken into consideration include:

  • Other university degrees.
  • Postgraduate degree.
  • Doctoral degree.
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, etc.
  • Training seminars of at least six months’ duration relevant to the subject of the Program.
  • Letters of recommendation.
Letters of recommendation must be sent by their authors via email to the Program Secretariat (eska-msc@chemeng.ntua.gr).

All other supporting documents must be submitted in scanned form. Candidates who are selected are required to submit to the IDMSc Secretariat the original supporting documents that were included in scanned form with their application at the previous stage. Final approval of admission to the IDMSc-ESS for candidate students is granted by the competent NTUA bodies, following verification of the proposed applications with regard to compliance with the above selection criteria.
